Construction Career Paths

Estimator

Do you have strong analytical and mathematical skills? Can you pay attention to the details but also see the "big picture"? Do you have construction experience in the field? Then you could become an estimator. Estimators are experienced in preparing estimates for tenders, proposals, and design build projects. Specific duties include: review construction plans and specifications, collect sub-contractor pricing, review working drawings and determine what trades are needed, estimate costs involving labour, material and overhead components for work to be bid on.

Project Coordinator/Project Manager

Project managers work out of the head office or field office. They perform a key role on construction projects and may have on-site staff (superintendents and/or forepersons), junior project managers/project coordinators and/or contract administrators reporting to them. Project Managers may start out as Project Coordinators and work their way into more senior positions. Junior Project Managers can work alone on smaller projects and with supervision for larger projects. Senior Project Managers can independently manage a number of more complex and/or expensive projects.

Field/Project Engineer

Can you successfully resolve conflicts and deal with a diverse group of individuals? Are you organized? Do you have good time management skills? Do you have the aptitude and interest for moving into a project management role? Then you could have a career as a project/field engineer.

Site Superintendent

Do you have a diverse range of field experience in construction? Do you have a strong understanding of the construction trades? Are you a good leader who can clearly communicate complex instructions? Can you deal with a diverse group of individuals? Do you understand how construction projects proceed? Are you aware of how these projects are sequenced, both at the detailed and “big picture” level? Then you could have a career as a site superintendent.

Site superintendents are responsible for overall construction activities within the established design, budget and scheduling guidelines. Specific duties include: oversee day to day field activities, provide direct staff supervision, coordinate sub-trades, complete takeoffs and purchase materials as needed, conduct employee orientations and safety meetings, perform various human resources functions (i.e. hires, promotions, terminations and employee training).

Contract Administrator

Contract Administrators handle the procedures related to construction contracts. You can start out as a Contract Administrator and work your way into more senior positions like Project Manager.

Building Inspector

Can you write technical reports? Do you have a strong understanding of building code rules & regulations? Can you interpret construction drawings and deal with a wide range of individuals? Then you could become a building inspector.

Job Description: Inspect, test and grade buildings according to national and provincial building codes, enforce laws guided by building codes, review designs, working drawings and material specifications and any changes during construction or renovation.

Safety Codes Officer

Do you have a strong understanding of safety rules and regulations? Do you understand the technical aspects of the construction industry? Are you an effective communicator with good writing skills? Have you ever given a training session? Then safety officer may be the career for you.

Safety Codes Officers conduct ongoing site inspections, prepare safety reports noting all instances of non-compliance, enforce safety regulations as required, provide safety training to employees and liaise with wide variety of interested parties.

Buyer/Purchasing Agent

Do you have a broad knowledge of the current market (i.e. what products are available, how to get competitive pricing and delivery time frames, etc.)? Do you have strong coordination and time management skills? Are you an effective negotiator with good interpersonal skills? Then you could have a career as a buyer/purchasing agent.

Home Inspectors

Do you have a solid understanding of the residential construction industry? Do you have strong technical report writing skills? Are you an effective time manager with good interpersonal skills? Then you could become a home inspector.
